Old vs New Tax Regime: Myth vs Truth

FY 2026-27 (AY 2027-28) — verified against Union Budget 2026, unchanged from Budget 2025.

Myth

"The new regime is always better — it's the default now, so it must be the smarter choice."

Truth

It's the default only because you don't have to actively choose it — not because it's mathematically superior for everyone. If your annual 80C, HRA, and home loan interest deductions add up to roughly ₹3.75–4.25 lakh or more beyond the standard deduction, the old regime can still work out cheaper.

Myth

"Income up to ₹12 lakh is tax-free under the new regime, so nothing else matters below that."

Truth

The ₹60,000 Section 87A rebate makes tax payable ₹0 up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh for salaried, with the ₹75,000 standard deduction) — but this is a rebate, not a change to the slab rates themselves. It doesn't apply to special-rate income like most capital gains, so a salaried investor with large equity gains can still owe tax even under this threshold.

Myth

"Once you pick a regime, you're locked into it for life."

Truth

Salaried individuals with no business income can switch between the old and new regime every single financial year when filing their return. The one-per-lifetime switching restriction applies only to those with business or professional income.

Myth

"ELSS and 80C investments don't matter for tax anymore."

Truth

They still fully matter — under the old regime. ELSS, PPF, and other 80C-eligible instruments only reduce your taxable income if you file under the old regime; the new regime doesn't recognise them at all. Choosing a regime should come before deciding your ELSS strategy, not after.
